Abdominoplasty is an operation that consists in the removal of excess abdominal skin and fat and the correction of muscular flabbiness. This situation of excess skin and relaxed abdominal wall is common in patients that have had weight gains and later weight loss or in women who have had various pregnancies. Abdominoplasty gives a flatter, firmer stomach and a narrower waist.

Clinica Renova Blefaroplastia

Abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure with the aim to remove excess skin and fat from the abdomen and strengthen the musculature of the abdominal wall. This procedure can drastically reduce the convex form of the abdomen (known as a gut). It leaves a scar that depends on the extensiveness of the problem and the surgery required to correct it: it can be longer or shorter.

If you are considering the surgery, you should get the basic information about the surgery about what results should be expected. However, it is possible that not all your questions will be answered as a big part of the surgery depends on the individual circumstances and the preferences of the surgeon.

The perfect candidates for the procedure are the men and women who have a relatively good silhouette but are worried about the accumulation of fat and skin in the stomach region that will not reduce with diet and exercise. The surgery is especially useful for women who have had many pregnancies after which the skin and abdominal musculature is loosened and have not regained their initial shape. It can also improve the loss of elasticity of skin for older people – a situation that is often connected with moderate obesity.

People who have to lose a lot of weight for the procedure and also those who are planning to have future pregnancies have to postpone the surgery as during the surgery vertical muscles of the abdomen go tense.

If there are previous scars on the abdomen, this surgery might not be good as the scars might change location. In some cases this surgery can remove them.

In the first surgery the plastic surgeon will evaluate your health, determine the extent of fat accumulation in the stomach area and the flexibility of the skin. Do not forget to mention if you are a smoker, taking any medicines or vitamins. You should express your expectations sincerely so the surgeon can also do that and show you possible alternatives available for your problem – with their possibilities and limitations.

For example, if you have accumulated fat under you bellybutton, it would be effective to do a less complicated mini-abdominoplasty that requires less time in the clinic and is done in less time too. In other cases, either in mini or normal abdominoplasty, it is possible to add liposuction of hips to improve the silhouette. In some cases only liposuction of the stomach is enough. In any case, the surgeon will determine the most adequate and optimal procedure together with you. During the consult, the surgeon will also introduce the type of anaesthesia used, the necessity to sing in to a clinic and the prices. Abdominoplasy, except for special cases, is not included in social security.

The normal and mini-abdominoplasty will always be done in an OR in a clinic or hospital. The liposuction will also take place in an OR under strict aseptic conditions.

General anaesthesia is usually used in the procedures – you will be sleeping until the end of the surgery. In some cases, mostly in mini-abdominoplasty and abdominal liposuction, local anaesthesia with sedative can be used so you would stay awake but relaxed during the procedure and feel no pain (in some cases discomfort might be felt).

A complete abdominoplasty usually takes 2 to 4 hours, depending on the amount of correction necessary. A mini abdominoplasty usually takes 1 or 2 hours. It is done by a long incision from one hip to another just above the pubic area. A second incision will be made next to the bellybutton to separate the tissues.

In a mini abdominoplasty a much smaller incision is make, also above the pubic area. However, the other incision is not necessary as the bellybutton can be lowered to stretch the skin.

Next, the skin is separated from the abdominal wall upwards until the ribs, exposing the abdominal muscle. They are tensioned and unified in the middle making a firm abdominal wall and a narrower waist. The separated skin is stretched down and excess is removed; the bellybutton is put in its new position. Finally, sutures are made and a bandage is placed along with a temporal drain tube to eliminate excess fluids. In the mini abdominoplasty, the skin is only separated between the incision and bellybutton, excess skin is removed and sutures are made.

The excess skin is removed; in complete abdominoplasty the bellybutton is relocated.

After an abdominoplasty: The stomach is flatter and narrower. The scars, although definitive, will be less visible with time.

During the first day the stomach will be swollen and some discomfort and pain may occur that will be controlled with medicine. Depending on the extent of the surgery, you can go home in a few hours or stay in the clinic for another 2 or 3 days. Your doctor will give you instructions on how to shower.

It might take some weeks or months before you start feeling like before. If your physical state before the surgery was good with a strong abdominal musculature, the recuperation will be faster. Some people return to work only after 2 weeks, some need 3 or 4 weeks of recuperation after the surgery.

Physical exercise helps the recovery. Even people who did not practice sports before the surgery should take it up to reduce swelling, reduce the risk of blood clots and tone the muscles. At the same time, excessive exercise must be avoided until you feel comfortable with it.

It may seem that the scars look worse during the first 3 to 6 months during the recovery – this is normal. The scars will heal after 9 month to 1 year. Although the scars will never disappear, they will not be visible when wearing a bikini.

Every year abdominoplasties are done successfully. If a qualified surgeon performs it the results are very good. However, there are always risks and possibilities of complications with surgeries. Post op complications, such as infection or blood clots may occur but they are rare.

Infection can be cured with antibiotics and draining but it extends the stay in the hospital. Moving the legs and getting up as soon as the surgeon allows it can avoid blood clots. Bad scarring may require a second surgery. Smokers need to quit smoking a few weeks before the surgery because smoking increases the risks of complications and makes the scarring process more difficult.

Following the surgeon’s recommendations before and after the surgery, especially when it comes to taking up physical activities again, can decrease the risks.

Abdominoplasty (normal or mini) gives excellent results to patients whose abdominal muscles are weakened and have excess skin and fat.

In most cases the results are definitive if the surgery is accompanied by a sustainable diet and periodical exercise.

If you are realistic about you expectations and are willing to have the scarring and a long recuperation period, the abdominoplasty might be for you.
